On June 1st I did challenge II(b).
I randomly ended up with page 154 column D of our A-Z. In fact I did pages 136 and page 166 as well.
I think there was one point where I went outside the column but only briefly.

Last weekend I had a go at challenge II (b):

II. (b)

Get an A-Z map (or similar) of your city - something that has a grid of squares overlaid on the maps. Choose a page at random, then choose a grid column on that page at random. Start in the square at the top of this column, and travel as far as you can down the page without leaving the column.

I couldn't find my A-Z street atlas, so had to use a city centre map. Report, with images )

Hi!

Report: Flanzance with ten small images.

I've noticed that flaneurs has been lucky enough to acquire some new members so I decided to include a brief introduction with my first June challenge post this year.

On the flanning spectrum from rules constrained walkers at one end to free flowing wanderers at the other, I'm an absent-minded deriveur. I bend the rules until they're origami because even in this seventh year of the challenge I can't remember whether I'm supposed to be walking first left then second right or first right then second left. I also often play in towns and smaller cities where if I want to walk in a straight line from a (somewhat) random starting point then I need to have a choice of heading south or north, so I don't almost immediately walk out into countryside or fall into the sea!

I hope you all enjoy the June challenge as much as I do and that it shows you interesting places. :-)

June Challenge Lines II.(b), walk south from a random point, modified by walking north in a straight line from my point of arrival because I had an appointment northeast of where I began the walk at University station. A report with 14 small images at my journal.

E03 W&B Canal near University, Birmingham 06-14

It’s going to take me at least a couple of weeks to report but I also confess to challenge II. (c) a local council walk (my first attempt at this challenge!), and an epic version of I. (a) "investigate interesting thing seen from bus", both in Birmingham.

10N River Usk, Newport 06-14

Newport: A+ for flanage and would tourist again, especially if the cathedral tower was open so I could ascend and enjoy the reputedly spectacular views.

C05 View of Coventry city centre from Ringway footbridge 06-14

In conclusion: Coventry city centre is small and pleasantly pedestrianised, there are many interesting places to visit, and the natives are friendly. Recommended for a day out or two.

I hope you’re all having fun with the June Challenge too! :-)

Having earlier failed to find Swindon engaging, I was determined to try again. June challenge II.(b), walking within predefined map lines, report at my journal:

I was in Ledbury and had more than an hour to wait for my bus, AND there was a momentary lack of torrential cats-n-dogs and/or flying trees, so I decided to drag my disinclined self on a modified version of [community profile] flaneurs's June challenge II(b). I walked from the bus stops in the centre of town along the straight main streets, south-ish and then north-ish, until I reached the end of the shopping area in each direction. That's about 2km + detours and, yes, as I wasn't well it took me over an hour.

Report with photos at my journal (and if you're into early modern English provincial architecture then Ledbury is heritage central).

Enjoy!
