Today's Adventures
Aug. 30th, 2025 11:38 pmToday we went to the Tuscola Family Fun Day and the Arthur Amish Country Cheese Festival.
Amusingly, I'm wearing a goldenrod-yellow T-shirt with a corncob and the caption "This is my crop top." (It's full length.) I got at least half a dozen compliments on it. :D I bought it earlier this year at another event, definitely a good choice for fall festivals.
This was our first visit to the Fun Day. It's really meant as a small local event, and didn't have enough that we're likely to do it again. There were some good bits though. Someone had a bubble machine going; that was pretty. The activities were clustered around the little pocket park with a gazebo that we spotted recently.
The vendors were up by the community center. I bought a hotpad shaped like the top of a cherry pie, lattice and all, that is just adorable.
Another booth was Electric Chain Studio with very nice metal jewelry.
Next we moved on to the Cheese Festival. Arthur is a pretty town to walk around, with lots of old buildings. There are houses painted in several colors. One building looked like a tiny motel or possibly a boarding house. An old wrought-iron fence ran around one yard. Some of the streets are still brick.
My partner Doug quickly spotted the Bierman Farms Food Truck, where he got a trashy taco. The toppings included pico de gallo and sour cream. I got a barbecue beef brisket sandwich from Mac Daddy, which was quite good. We also got a lemon shake-up to split.
A crystal merchant we've seen before has started a store, Not Today Heifer. It's a mix of western themed jewelry, leather, furs, stones, and other interesting bits. I've seen the style before but never east of the Mississippi. I found a turquoise chip bracelet that I plan to put on a statuette in the fairy window. I've been calling her Turquoise Woman but it's taken me a long time to find the right turquoise.
I bought a tie-dye T-shirt in shades of blue and aqua that looks very watery. :D
We stopped at Arthur Floral & Home Decor. We picked out two squares of fudge, one apple and one maple. This is one of the places you definitely want to catch if you're visiting Arthur.
A favorite vendor, Traci Smith of Tastefully Simple products, had the Absolutely Almond Pound Cake box mix, so we bought one of those. After we finish yesterday's Ginger Gold Apple Pie, we'll have to watch for some strawberries to go with the pound cake.
The Arthur Bee Club had a booth selling honey. I picked out two bottles, one pale yellow from white clover and the other a deeper amber from wildflowers. I don't keep bees in manufactured hives, but I greatly appreciate people who do. My girls are in a maple tree this year. I give them a place to live, they pollinate my flowers, everybody wins. \o/
Lovington Assembly of God church had a booth with free water, free candy, some handouts, and other stuff. I picked up some ice to cool off with. I love the fact that a few people around here are really serious about their spirituality and have picked up on the importance of taking care of folks. What would Jesus do? He would totally be at a street fair handing out free water. :D
My partner Doug found a light switch cover with Wile E. Coyote on it, which is awesome.
On the way home, we stopped at a gas station and got Twix ice cream treats. Those were pretty good.
It has been a fun and wonderful day.

Yes ...

My hair is a static generator but it's damp enough here most of the time for it not to be a hazard. Nylon was still widely used when I was a child though and I used to spark back then... "BOOM". ;-)
