Flanage within Conwy's medieval town walls

I walked first left turn then second right turn then first left &c [not June challenge III. (d) ], beginning from the highest and most landward gate of Conwy's medieval town walls: flanage report at my journal, with architecture and edification, and a bonus quick guide to Conwy.

Honestly, it will never cease to amaze me how magnificent semi-ruined medieval warfare can appear when I don't think about it too hard. And the whole enforcement of privilege through architecture (e.g. Plas Mawr). I can't decide if the Romantics did us all a disservice by reclaiming castle architecture for fantasy or whether they gave overdue closure to an unspeakable legacy despoiling otherwise attractive landscapes. Probably both.

Conwy is a fantastic town to visit though, especially for those of us who can manage the steep streets and spiral stairs.

The past is often beautiful from the perspective of the present. I like ruins too. The old ones in North America predate the current country. I've been to Cahokia Mounds, for instance, which at its peak held more people than London at the same time.

Interesting isn't it, the places and eras we visit as spectators versus the place we might chose to live: all those animatronic dinosaur displays. I'd much prefer to live at Poverty Point, but Cahokia was a more spectactular architectural statement (although they weren't contemporaneous, obv, so can't rly be compared straightforwardly).

Sooth. I enjoy exploring different times -- walking through ruins, or museums, or living history sites. Lincoln Log Cabin is hosting an Underground Railroad display this year that we want to visit.

That sounds worth a visit, yes. When I was a kid one of my favourite visits was the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum which was just a bunch of random old farm buildings but I loved them.

Lincoln Log Cabin used to be pure living history, and is now more generally educational. But they have food trucks for their festivals now, which is a great improvement.
