Some unusual internal and external views of Hereford Cathedral

That's a great set of pictures! I love going up church towers.

Thank you! I was very lucky to have an easygoing and thorough guide. I also love ascending (most) church towers. They're all different and one never knows quite what one might see.

Oooh, wow, I loved this shot in particular (although they were all great). There's something almost M.C. Escher-like about this one.

Thank you. The tile work at Hereford does give a strong visual effect when seen from the lantern. I tend to think of most old multi-stage cathedrals as looking as if they were designed by a committee (which, in effect, they were), possibly a committee of architects who previously worked on the Unseen University.

Ooh, the inner photos are my favourites. The roughness of the finish inside the transepts contrasts so strongly with the fineness and delicacy of the chambers below.

As I understand it, some of the ?lime? ?mortar? has eroded away over the centuries and left the ribs of the vaulting more exposed than they would have been (although this reduced mass has the ?advantage? of reducing the weight on the vaulting and arches below). The architects have speculated that some cathedral vaulting is about half its original depth.
