June challenge: IIb in Cambridge

Last weekend I had a go at challenge II (b):

II. (b)

Get an A-Z map (or similar) of your city - something that has a grid of squares overlaid on the maps. Choose a page at random, then choose a grid column on that page at random. Start in the square at the top of this column, and travel as far as you can down the page without leaving the column.

I couldn't find my A-Z street atlas, so had to use a city centre map. Random.org gave me 3, which I translated to C. At first I thought this was going to make for a rather boring walk, but when I looked at my other options I conceded that I couldn't really have hoped for much better.

Getting there was the first challenge. I live quite a long way off the eastern end of the map, probably at about column Q if it went that far, and it was the Bumps weekend (this is a rowing thing) so the riverside paths were quite crowded.

Column C starts on Victoria Road, opposite Prince Henry Court. Nothing much to see here.

Then it took me down Shelly Row, which was a charming little street that felt more like a village. It had a fantastic tree, too.

I emerged onto the Madingley Road just next to Westminster College, which I am pretty sure is a seminary for the United Reformed Church.

Then I proceeded down Queen's Road for four whole squares, passing several college gates and this very famous view:

I then turned right onto Sidgwick Avenue and left down Hall Road, passing another theological college (Ridley, evangelical Anglican).

Finally I found the marvellously named Church Rate Walk and followed it all the way to the end, to make sure that I'd got all the way to the edge of the map and beyond.

It is indeed. Nice dining room with decent food!

Nice one! Is that tree growing through the wall?
