As I understand it, some of the ?lime? ?mortar? has eroded away over the centuries and left the ribs of the vaulting more exposed than they would have been (although this reduced mass has the ?advantage? of reducing the weight on the vaulting and arches below). The architects have speculated that some cathedral vaulting is about half its original depth.
