I love this post so much! I wonder if your repeated attempts at this will ever send you westward. I haven't yet experienced ending up on the same bus again, though perhaps I will next year.
I thoroughly recommend trying a Vietnamese baguette (bánh mì). I've had good vegetarian ones from Panda Panda in Deptford.
I've been to the Kindness Offensive bookshop in Tufnell Park (though looking at the route of the 253, I don't think this is what you went past). They let you take three books for free per visit. I also donated them some of mine.
