I work near two large railway termini and I've considered doing flan from either Waterloo or London Bridge. As we know the instructions state: Choose a railway terminus that lies within the bounds of your chosen city/town, and then choose a railway line that terminates there. Now travel outwards from the terminus, following the route of your line as closely as you can while sticking to public footpaths, streets, etc (i.e. I'm not asking you to trespass on the line itself). Continue travelling for an integer number of hours (1, 2, 3, etc) and then stop (if 1 hour is too much for you, then stop when you've had enough).
Work is close to Waterloo so I cheated (slightly) and started walking from the nearest railway bridge (junction Carlisle Lane/Royal Street) and decided to walk for whichever was shortest - 1 hour, or until I ran out of battery.
This was a walk of railway arches and bridges. All the arches were either for rent or being used as industrial units. Two large developments closed off my best routes causing me to detour. I started with 23% battery and ended with 8% after 1 hour. I used my phone to make notes and take photos, but not for maps or GPS.
1.Start at junction Carlisle Lane/Royal Street near St Thomas' Hospital. Walk south on Carlisle Lane until the road is gated off. Turn left and walk under the railway and right onto Hercules Road. Continue walking south.
2. Turn right onto Lambeth Road and continue south on Sail Street.
3. Turn right onto Juxon Street and continue south on Ingram Close.
4. It should be "turn right onto Old Paradise Street" and then continue south on Newport Street. However Newport Street is a building site and closed.
4a. Turn right onto Old Paradise Street and continue until turning left onto Lambeth High Street. Costa Coffee have a compound here with a roastery and arches.
4b. Lambeth High Street Recreation Ground is half closed due to redevelopment. Cross the open bit, by the Watch House stone, and join Whitgift Street.
4c. Go under the railway on Whitgift Street until it meets the rest of Newport Street
5. Continue SSW on Newport Street until it meets Black Prince Road.
6. Continue S on Vauxhall Walk. Go into Pedlar's Park to get closer to the railway.
7. Right into Salamander Street, left into Randall Road. More arches!
8. Randall Road is closed at the bottom so turn down Randall Row, Vauxhall Walk (past ex Surrey Ironmongers) and Tinworth Street. Citadel Place is quite a scary looking high security compound - I didn't dare take a photo.
9. Follow Tinworth Street and turn left onto the Albert Embankment.
10. Left onto Glasshouse Walk. Right onto Godling Street. Arches, including the gayest one and a sauna next door.
11. Cross Kennington Lane and walk down South Lambeth Road. The back of arches - one belongs to Sainsbury's at Vauxhall Station, one is a men only sex shop.
12. Turn back under the railway on South Lambeth Place. 60 mins are up. 8% battery.
13. Vauxhall bus station ->home
