Hi!

Report: Flanzance with ten small images.

I've noticed that flaneurs has been lucky enough to acquire some new members so I decided to include a brief introduction with my first June challenge post this year.

On the flanning spectrum from rules constrained walkers at one end to free flowing wanderers at the other, I'm an absent-minded deriveur. I bend the rules until they're origami because even in this seventh year of the challenge I can't remember whether I'm supposed to be walking first left then second right or first right then second left. I also often play in towns and smaller cities where if I want to walk in a straight line from a (somewhat) random starting point then I need to have a choice of heading south or north, so I don't almost immediately walk out into countryside or fall into the sea!

I hope you all enjoy the June challenge as much as I do and that it shows you interesting places. :-)

This was my first attempt at flâneuring (flâneurery?) and I decided to go for the first left, second right option, starting from home. I was running, and decided to go for the duration of a podcast I'd just downloaded, which was 28 minutes. I thought that would be quite short, but actually I still went through 33 turns and 35 different streets in that time.

By the end of the podcast I'd run about 4.5 km, but because the route had generally made an anti-clockwise loop (Runkeeper map), I was only about 1.5 km from home, so there were no problems getting back. Given that it's hot out there today I was running in only shorts and vest, and the path took me through some of the more Muslim bits of Rotterdam, I felt a little awkward at times. But hey, Bullet Catcher Street!

[personal profile] squirmelia did a walk in London based on instructions from a site designed to guide people on mundane journeys through San Francisco, in this case to 345 West Portal Avenue. I then did a walk in Birmingham based on googling for 345 West Portal Avenue in Birmingham, UK, and adding a list of generalised instructions derived from squirmelia’s post. My report of this walk (15 small images) is more involved than usual. As ever, please feel free to just enjoy the pictures either there or at flickr.

Dear [personal profile] kake, I did hypothetically, accidentally, win at your September challenge... if we include both the extension into October and the fact I wasn't actually aiming at the Much Dewchurch part of the challenge (oh, we do like to be be ciderpiano!). I know you're busy so no comment or prize necessary (as ever). Photo for the curious:
